Rovinj is often described as small Venetia or Croatian St Tropez. Its idyllic location and beauty at any season, attracts thousands of tourists. Out of the historic old town, a cathedral is rises nobly with its 61-meter bell tower. The church was dedicated to St. Euphemia and St. George – the town’s saint patrons. Euphemia, who used to live during the persecution of the Christians was subjected to tortures, and at the end thrown to the lions. Her body, however, was not shattered by wild animals. The legends says that in year 800, a local boy fished out from the sea a sarcophagus with the relics of St. Euphemia, which were laid down at St. George church. For over five hundred years, Rovinj was under the reign of the Venetian Republic and therefore, you can sense an Italian climate here. The uniqueness of the town adds a biancone istriano stone, a characteristic for the majority of the peninsula and the northern Adriatic coast line towns, including Venice and its lagoon.
