Plitvice Lakes National Park is said to be the most beautiful natural attraction of Europe. In 1979, this ‘continental Croatian pearl’ was listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its diversity. Plitvice Lakes National Park which has a total surface area of 266 km², comprises 16 terraced lakes, combined with waterfalls and cascades altogether. The lakes are divided into the upper lakes, which is larger, calmer and surrounded by thick forests, and the lower lakes that are below the 70-meter high rocky walls and are less forested. It was in 1949 that the Plitvice Lakes was listed as the National Park, but till date it is the most popular tourist site in Croatia, and each year its number of visitors are increasingly growing.
